At the Drive-In
One of my fave things about Atlanta is the Starlite Six Drive In - it rocks! Not only is it one of the few working drive-ins around, it also hosts way fun summer events. Last month it was the Rock-n-Roll Monster Bash and a fabu time was had by all! I had no shortage of awesome peeps to shoot and here are a few of my faves (you can see more on my Flickr account here):

Random Thoughts and Minor Annoyances
I went to the High Museum this weekend - thanks MO! - and can I just say, skip the Monet Water Lillies - whatev. But - go see the Richard Misrach photos - amazing large scale beach scenes. A must see-in-person sort of thing!
I got an invite to a friend's birthday party. Her husband suggested - in the invitation - that an iPhone might make a good gift. Really? Really?? I can't even afford an app right now, much less the whole friggin' phone.
And finally - Why have people abandoned the adverb? Where has the "-ly" suffix gone? Don't people know you can't "live adventurous" or "talk soft" or "dance bad"? I hate it. It makes me crazy. And then I scream at the people on the TV. And they can't hear me. Sigh

Regarding subtitles......and a millinery triumph
I've been watching A LOT of movies lately and I have to say my current faves are all foreign. Weird, huh? I know some people are totally turned off by subtitles and the idea of "reading" a movie - and to them, I say, "Get over it!" Seriously, you're missing out on some great stuff! And if it's really, really, really that bad - which I doubt, but whatever - then just turn off the subtitles and turn on the dub. So what if the lips don't match?
Last night's film was Waltz with Bashir - an amazing piece of animation from an Israeli filmmaker recounting his experiences in Lebanon. It's bad-ass and you should watch it! And totally not bad watching the dub version - not as annoying since it's animated and they got actors with great accents so it seems "right".
On to the HORROR - oh yeah, horror movies - love them!! If you do too then I've got some good ones for ya: Let the Right One In is a Swedish vampire movie that presents a totally new take on the genre. I looooved it - very cool! And then we have Martyrs - a French horror film that is truly the most disturbing thing I've seen in awhile. This movie is NOT for the faint of heart, however, if you love dark, dark stuff you'll love this one too.
So - there you have it - three great foreign films to add to your Netflix account - go - expand your mind and enjoy!
Oh yeah - the millinery triumph? Ok - well, I went to Corn-Dog-O-Rama - East Atlanta's annual festival celebrating the greatest food-on-a-stick of them all - and while there I spied this gentleman, who had created a hat out of a watermelon and two corndogs - what a perfect summer fashion statement - if you’re CRAZY! Sir, I salute you and your hat - God Bless America!

I Love the Night Life
I like to stay up late. And I really, really like to go out for food late. I don't know why. It's just more fun. And the food tastes better.
And the week before, Sharon (that's her fingers below) took me out for sushi at RuSan's - Thanks Sharon! And thanks to Rusan's for staying open late...
I just got back from:
Cafe Intermezzo - Hazelnut Cake and Irish Coffee - yummmmmmmmmmmy. Word.
Before that it was after-midnight Chinese food from Bamboo Luau - Senor went along for the ride:
Prior to that - Dunkin' Donuts - Senor again joined the midnight run - he loves the nightlife too.

Recently I made a photo collage of other places I frequent when it's dark out:

Holy mother, it is HOT in the ATL right now!!! Summer is fully on without a doubt. I think I may have to hide inside until the sun goes down...

In the meantime, you still have 2 days to vote on a title for the photo in the below post - get on it, someone's gonna win stuff! I'm also participating in the Georgia Etsy Street Team's summer sale - chk it:

Whoop! It's a contest!
Ok, ok, I know I've been terribly remiss in my blogging duties! I have no excuse, except the ever-so-tired, "I've been busy!" "Busy doing what?", you may ask. Well, lots of stuff. And I plan on writing and posting pics this week to catch you all up....In the meantime, I'm having my first contest - whoooooo! Are you excited? Well, you should be!
I need help titling this photo, which I am listing today in my Etsy store. I was pumping gas in the middle of nowhere during a road trip and saw this banana peel stuck in a near-by fence. How did it get there? Why would you put your peel in a fence? It just baffled me. But I had to photograph it. So - here it is - what should I call it? I'll be taking your suggestions all week and will add the winning title to Etsy on Saturday. You can comment on the blog, or email me at birdsandcherries@yahoo.com. And the winner's prize? A free print of this, or any other image, in my Etsy store - yay for you!

Things I miss now that I'm poor (again)
The recession - it's fun, yeah? Sigh. I know. We're all feeling the pain. My nice job? It went bye-bye. My nice house? Lost to foreclosure. My fancy stuff? Sold it on craigslist.
And you know what? I don't even miss most of it. This isn't all bad. In fact, there's been a lot of good. A gut check. Figuring out what's really important and all that good stuff. And here's what I really miss, now that I'm flat broke:
1. A DVR - Last week I missed the end of the American Idol finale 'cause I had to switch over to see the beginning of The Ultimate Fighter. I hate having to make Sophie's Choice. Oh - I hate having to watch commercials too.
2. Bikini waxes - Shaving does not achieve the same look and feel. 'Nuff said.
3. Fancy soap - I bought some cheap soap at the health food store and now my bathroom smells like hippies. Gross.
4. Good wine - Oh. Yeah. That $7.95 1.5L bottle of Vendage is AWESOME. Really. I love it. It's super. Really.
5. Traveling - I used to go places. And see things. I can still do that, of course. Just within a much, much smaller area....and not overnight.... and it ain't quite the same.
Ok - pity party is over. Next time I'll write about things are better in a cheaper form - yeah, right.

My life in film...
So - I may be starting a new career in film. The moving kind; as opposed to the still kind, which has always been my BFF. I am trying to break into the production side of the house and just went to something called the "PA Academy". It taught me to be early (which I always am anyway) and to keep my mouth shut.....And to pick up trash. ....All very critical skills, to be sure! In all seriousness, it was very informative AND I got to learn walkie-talkie lingo and etiquette which I always wanted to know!
My BF is a writer/director and has a screenplay getting some nice attention currently. Hopefully, it will get made and I'll get to work on that....In the meantime, I am looking for PA work and desperate to get some real experience. It is so strange to be a newbie at something, to try and start over again. I love it, but it is weird....feels like the first day of school.
The BF may be entering the 48 Hour Film Festival - which means we'd be making a film start to finish in - you guessed it - 48 hours! Just the thought makes me wonder where to get a large quantity of (in order of desirability); coke, or adderall, or meth, or Hydroxycut. Ha Ha! Just kidding! I'm sure caffeine and adrenaline can get me through.....This is going to be interesting....

Good work, crazy musicians!
Last Saturday I took the BF to The Earl to see Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and they slaughtered it! Seriously amazing show - if they come to your town, ya gotta check them out. It is a crazy, freaky, noise-filled performance that will leave you saying, "WTF?" and "Wow!" here's some pics....

Negro y Azul
So, I did not go out in public from last week, at all. As in, I stayed inside and on the sofa for six days straight. And "why?" you may ask.....well 'cause I looked and felt like I got Chris Brown'd, that's why. Scratches and scabs all over my face, a broken (?) nose and two black eyes - really pretty stuff. And all from an alcohol related fall in a parking lot in front of a club - Sweet.
Apparently, I had a bit too much to drink whilst celebrating my friend S's birthday, Saturday the 18th. From what I hear - because I certainly can't remember - I made a complete ass out of myself in the club and then proceeded to go outside and break my face. The lack of marks on my hands tells me that it was a complete and utter face-plant with no sort of defensive maneuvers what-so-ever. In a party dress. And heels. Classy.
Said party dress is now stained with copious amounts of my dried blood - you know how those pesky head wounds are. I've wadded it up in the back of the closet and am saving it for a future art project. Yes, I do that sort of thing. My face is mostly recovered, as far as appearance goes. But, dammit, my nose still hurts likes hell - all the time! And my pride? My self-esteem? Yeah, not so much. Not feelin' too good about myself. Nope. Not at all. Sigh.

And the truth shall set you free.....
I just deleted an earlier post...and I'm changing up what this blog is going to be about.....Why? Well, because I am not good at writing bullshit.
My life is a train wreck, a hot mess, an unnatural disaster. Sometimes. And so, you know, that's how I'm gonna write it out. Just like it happens.
If blood and sex and drugs and cursing upset you, then should probably stop reading now and never return to this page. Just sayin'.

Easter Sunday with Senor
So, last Sunday was a beautiful day and I decided to drive around and take pictures - which is a pretty normal Sunday afternoon thing for me to do. It is spring time here in Atlanta and all the dogwoods and azaleas are blooming and it is quite lovely. I had my chihuahua, Senor, with me and he decided to be in all the photos - weird! So - I present to you:

Well hello, gorgeous!
C'mon in babe....I don't bite. Much.
My name is Alex and I live in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S. of A. Actually, my full name is Alexandra, but nobody calls me that. I've had several last names, and even more nicknames. I've lived in Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, Hawaii and Australia. I have been a brunette, a dirty blond, a platinum blond, a redhead and now - black, black, black, as the darkest night. Like my soul. BWAHAHAHAHA. Ok. Sorry.
I like cheese, Chuck Palahniuk novels, nice eyelashes, vodka, laughing and making people laugh, the Ramones, low-rider cars, art galleries, shiny things, mixed martial arts, bad reality TV, red wine, traveling, hair dye, Coen Brothers movies, clean sheets, good conversation, vampires, mangoes, vinyl, extreme glamour, pistachio ice cream, real tits, and freestyle moto/bmx.....plus lots of other things, but that's a pretty good representation.
